A 3 year-old child suffered significant scalding burns to 16% of his total body surface area when an improperly-installed electric range tipped forward as the child attempted to use the open door as a step to climb on the kitchen counter. Although the over was off, a pot of boiling liquid on the range-top spilled over him. The range’s manufacturer had shipped the range with UL-required anti-ti brackets and instructed that they should be installed. A case against the retailer and their contract installer resulted in a confidential settlement reached at mediation.
